Daniel Lawrence Book Launch: Disinformed: The History of Humanity's Search for Truth

What is truth and who can we trust? It’s harder now than ever to find reliable information, with “fake news,” Twitter bots, and disinformation becoming household topics of conversation and threatening the foundations of democracy. But thousands of years ago, ancient thinkers grappled with these same issues of credibility, persuasion, and deception. The ancient Greek philosopher Plato warned of those who could “falsely persuade,” and Gorgias likened speech to a drug that could bewitch the mind. In his new book, Disinformed: The History of Humanity’s Search for Truth, Dr. Daniel Lawrence shows how the ancient art of rhetoric is not just a tool to persuade and manipulate, but a mode of thought that can be used to evaluate the onslaught of invasive messaging that we confront in our everyday lives.
